Protecting your online (ass)ets: Creating a secure password
While building traffic and notoriety for your web identity may take a lot of your time and energy, it’s important to dedicate some effort to security. Few steps are as easy to keeping your assets secure as a strong password.
A post in Eches Blog does a good job of outlining the increasing strength of password crackers and the need for a more secure passwords.
Bruce Schneier, a pre-eminent expert in network security, offers the following suggestions for a better password:
- “Misspell†your words: instead of using “appleâ€, do “apfel†or something similar.
- Use “appendagesâ€: numbers and symbols (!, @, %) can break up the already mangled words.
- Try to avoid years or common numbers at the end of words: It’s predictable
- Insert those appendages in the roots of words: Use the symbols to break up the words, instead of dividing them (“ap1!1felcyd%ir†“instead of “appel%cider1990â€
It may seem like these passwords will be hard to commit to memory, the extra level of security is worth it for the sake of protecting any money you could have in your accounts as well as the integrity of your web real estate.
